grid expansion

Driving forward the expansion of the electricity grid and synchronising it with the expansion of renewable energies to ensure the success of the energy transition.

Well-developed networks for a successful energy transition.

In order for Germany to become climate neutral by 2045 and generate at least 80% of its electricity from renewable energies by 2030, it needs a well-developed transmission grid. This is because wind power from the north must be reliably transported to the industrial centres in the south. TransnetBW is consistently pushing ahead with grid expansion and is committed to ensuring that the expansion of renewable energies and grids takes place synchronously. This is the only way to make the energy transition a success.

ULTRANET and TransnetBW's flagship project SuedLink are Projects of Common Interests (PCIs). PCIs are important cross-border infrastructure projects that link the energy systems of the EU across countries and contribute to an integrated internal energy market and climate policy objectives: delivering affordable, secure and sustainable energy for all Europeans and contributing to a climate neutral energy system by 2050.

Our Position on a European Grids Package

Accelerate Europe's Electricity Grids

Europe’s electricity transmission system is facing increasing constraints due to accelerating electrification, rising connection demand, and growing system complexity. While the Commission’s Grids Package appropriately emphasizes the need for faster grid expansion, it does not sufficiently address key implementation bottlenecks and entails risks of additional regulatory burden and centralization, potentially weakening national accountability and exposing TSOs to misaligned risks. This position paper presents the joint recommendations of the four German TSOs — 50Hertz, Amprion, TenneT, and TransnetBW.

Delivering the Grids Package

Making Grid Planning Work in Practice

In THE POWER BRIEF we spotlight key topics of transmission system operators – concise and to the point.

Our analysis highlights that effective European grid planning requires scenario diversity, robust methodologies, and a planning framework that ensures responsibility for implementation, to ensure planning reforms translate into real delivery.

Strengthening Permitting Rules in the Grids Package

In THE POWER BRIEF we spotlight key topics of transmission system operators – concise and to the point.

The Grids Package can only succeed if permitting bottlenecks are removed. The Commission’s proposals help — but targeted improvements are still needed.
